As I would imagine in all cross country trips - you have a game plan that sometimes you just have to stray from. That's what we did last night when after our hour plus in the traffic jam we rolled into Flagstaff for some dinner at what we thought was 7:30, but was actually 6:30 (Arizona doesn't participate in daylight savings so for half the year it's on west coast time and half on mountain time). Anyhow, instead of trying to go find our campsite in Sedona, in the dark (and we couldn't reach them by phone) we decided to start investigating the cheap motel options after some beers and pizza at the Beaver St. Brewery (a popular Sunday night hang out apparently). Caleb was thoroughly amused by driving me around to the 4 or so different cheap motels all clustered by the highway entrance (Motel 6, TravelLodge, HolidayInn Express, etc.) and having me run in to ask about availability and rates. We finally settled on the TravelLodge - the best deal - HBO and free wireless for the bargain price of $50. We enjoyed a relaxing evening of blogging, Sopranos, and Iron Chef.
This morning we are out the door and on our way to Sedona and will find ourselves camping tonight at the Grand canyon in prep for a big day of exploration tomorrow.
